📢 Community Announcement | Cleaning Up General Chat

Hey everyone!

I wanted to address something I've noticed regarding the state of our general chat and the overall environment we're fostering as a community.

Compared to some of our other channels, general chat has developed a reputation for being a place that people actively avoid. I've heard concerns from members who don't feel particularly comfortable participating in conversations there, largely because of the type of content, humour, and discussions that regularly take place.

That's something I think we need to change.

General chat is supposed to be one of the most accessible and welcoming spaces in our Discord. It is the first place new members see when they join the server. It should be somewhere that anyone, whether they're a new member or someone who's been here for years, can jump into a conversation, make friends, and feel included. Instead, I think we've reached a point where certain types of conversations and behaviours have become so normalized that they've unintentionally pushed other people away.

I want to make a few things clear:

  • Having fun and joking around is absolutely encouraged. We're not trying to eliminate humour, banter, or people's personalities.
  • Be mindful of the content you're posting. Excessively sexual, inappropriate, offensive, or deliberately provocative content can make the channel uncomfortable for others.
  • Consider how your conversations affect people outside your immediate friend group. Just because something is acceptable among your friends doesn't necessarily mean it's appropriate for a public community channel.
  • Make room for others to participate. General chat shouldn't feel like a space dominated by a handful of people where newcomers struggle to join in.
  • Expect more active moderation. Our staff will be taking a more proactive approach to redirecting conversations and addressing behaviour that detracts from the environment we're trying to build.

I don't want general chat to become a place where people feel they have to fit into a particular crowd or tolerate certain content just to participate.

This isn't meant to single anyone out, nor is it an attempt to suddenly make the server overly strict. It's about recognizing that the purpose of a channel can sometimes drift away from what we originally intended, and I am taking responsibility for improving it.

I'd really appreciate everyone's cooperation in helping us make that happen. Please use modmail via @AeternaBot dms or make a ticket or use /report if you see something that breaks our rules or any of the points made above. We need to work together to ensure that this remains a safe place for all to participate in. Thank you all.
